An occupancy sensor, for example, can be used in conjunction with lighting control, air-conditioning, facade control and alarm systems. Targeted application of sensors and actuators with due regard for their functionality offers numerous benefits for subsequent operation.

Reduction of field level equipment simplifies maintenance and eliminates sources of error. The resulting reduction of system failures and associated savings in service staff time lead to further cost optimisation. The energy consumption of the whole building can be optimised through combination of different functionalities and logging of user behaviour during occupied periods. On the engineering side benefits arise in terms of maintenance: While the complexity of the functionality increases, the overhead is significantly lower compared to the maintenance requirements for different systems.
