Building Automation

Beckhoff Building Automation

The modular range of Beckhoff automation components are used to establish a wide range of building automation solutions worldwide. Due to its open interfaces based on IT and Windows standards, the PC- and Ethernet-based control technology is inherently extremely well suited for building automation.

The diverse functions of a building are based on thousands of data points that have to be acquired, processed, transferred, interpreted centrally and visualised. Modern facility management must be able to respond flexible and quick to changes in the building and its utilisation.

Over the life cycle of a building the different parties involved in the design, construction and operation such as planners, integrators, building operators and investors expect building automation to meet a wide range of requirements. The modular Beckhoff automation components enable the development and the implementation of suitable solutions for all building types and utilisation schemes such as administration buildings, offices, hotels, hospitals, schools, stores, etc.

During the building design phase the focus is on the integration of different functionalities in decentralised automation stations. Since the hardware for the Beckhoff controller/PC range is not set up to accommodate specific features, all functions of an integrated building automation system can be realised with a relatively small and therefore easily manageable number of components. Integration is supported by the modular I/O system and the corresponding building automation software libraries. Expedient integration that starts at the design stage lays the foundations for user-friendly building operation and therefore also satisfies the requirements of investors and building operators.

Advantages of integrated building automation

The integration phase already offers scope for utilising synergy effects through building automation covering different functionalities. An occupancy sensor, for example, can be used in conjunction with lighting control, air-conditioning, facade control and alarm systems. As a result, the costs and complexity of the system can already be reduced considerably during the construction phase. Targeted application of sensors and actuators with due regard for their functionality offers numerous benefits for subsequent operation.

Reduction of field level equipment simplifies maintenance and eliminates sources of error. The resulting reduction of system failures and associated savings in service staff time lead to further cost optimisation. The energy consumption of the whole building can be optimised through combination of different functionalities and logging of user behaviour during occupied periods. On the engineering side benefits arise in terms of maintenance: While the complexity of the functionality increases, the overhead is significantly lower compared to the maintenance requirements for different systems.

Beckhoff offers a range of hardware and software components for building automation based on industrial standards. This means high availability combined with long service life and maintenance-free operation is guaranteed for all components, so that safe operation is ensured 365 days a year. Individual components can be upgraded as required in order to ensure continuous operation of the overall system.

For users integrated building automation offers enhanced comfort and convenience, for operators it offers good lettability with high return. Due to the modularity and the high degree of configurability of the automation system, extensions, modifications, upgrades and changes in building use can be accommodated without the need for major expansion or adaptation of the hardware and software.

Partner concept
Since building automation requirements are very complex and varied, Beckhoff cooperates closely with partner companies. In this way, end customers can be sure that their systems are competently designed and executed.

Beckhoff supports its partners through advice and exclusive hardware and software training geared towards system design and integration requirements.

Cooperation with selected partner companies enables individual customer needs to be met in projects with any degree of complexity while at the same time addressing sustainability and flexibility requirements.
