“The iF label, which has been awarded for outstanding design for 60 years, is a seal of quality that is recognised all over the world,” says Andreas Thome, Product Manager PC Control at Beckhoff, who developed the DIN rail-mountable Embedded PC with multi-core processor technology. A panel of 50 design experts selected this year’s award winners from 4,615 entries from 55 countries. They evaluated the products’ design quality, workmanship, functionality, ergonomics, material selection and environmental compatibility. In the product manager’s view, good design moreover not only conveys quality, it also communicates the product’s functions directly to the user.
The CP32xx Panel PC that won the Red Dot Award is a high-end device designed for mounting arm installation that features state-of-the-art multi-core processing technology and multi-touch operating functionality. 20 years ago, it was still impossible to mount the display more than a few feet away from the PC. Usually the PC with its many connecting cables was installed in the control cabinet, and the panel with its two cables was mounted on a support arm. Only the CP-Link technology, which Beckhoff developed in 1998, gave users the freedom to install the PC and a remote operator interface up to 100 meters apart. With its CP32xx Panel PC, Beckhoff has now managed to produce a modern interpretation of integrated operating and control technology on the basis of ever smaller computers with more performance and variable display sizes. With its slim aluminium housing that meets IP 65 protection requirements, it is a high-end device in terms of performance, operating functionality, compact form factor and attractive design. The elegantly integrated cooling fins spread the waste heat produced by the processor across the entire aluminium housing and dissipate it to the surrounding air. With its smooth exterior, the convection zone furthermore forms a unit with the front panel.
