Plug & Work – I/O solution increases efficiency for standard applications with medium and high volume production. The EJxxxx EtherCAT plug-in modules are electronically-based on the well-known EtherCAT I/O system, while their design allows them to be directly attached to a circuit board. The circuit board is an application-specific signal distribution board that distributes signals and power to individual application-specific plug connectors in order to connect the controller to machine modules as required.

The EJ1100 EtherCAT Coupler is the link between the EtherCAT protocol at fieldbus level and the EtherCAT plug-in modules. The coupler converts the passing telegrams from Ethernet 100BASE-TX to E-bus signal representation. A module station consists of a coupler and any number of EtherCAT plug-in modules, which are automatically detected and individually displayed in the process image.

The EJ1128 EtherCAT plug-in module acquires the binary 3.3 V / 5 V control signals from the process level and transmits them, in an electrically isolated form, to the higher-level automation unit. It contains eight channels which indicate their signal state by means of light emitting diodes. The inputs are implemented with HCT-CMOS technology, i.e. the resulting switching thresholds allow sensors with both HC-CMOS and TTL outputs to be connected to the input. The supply voltage can be generated with the EJ9505.

The mark/space ratio is preset by a 16-bit value from the automation device. The output stage is protected against overload and short-circuit. The EtherCAT plug-in module has two channels, whose signal states are indicated by LEDs.

The EJ2521-0224 1-channel pulse train output module outputs a digital frequency signal via two 24 V tracks (A/B). The signal is used to control motor drivers and signal receivers which are controlled by single cycles. The pulse sequence and the pulse frequency or number of pulses are specified directly via the process data. The EtherCAT plug-in module has a 24 V latch input for connecting a limit switch, for example, and two 24 V switch outputs (capture/compare), which can be switched depending on the counter value in the module. The LEDs indicate the active outputs and the input.

A microprocessor handles linearisation across the whole temperature range, which is freely selectable. The EJ3202’s standard settings are: resolution 0.1 °C in the temperature range of Pt100 sensors in 3-wire connection. The EtherCAT plug-in modules indicate their signal state by means of light emitting diodes. Sensor malfunctions such as broken wires are indicated by error LEDs.

The EJ3255 EtherCAT plug-in module enables potentiometers to be connected directly. A stabilized power supply in the module and the ratiometric measurement of the input voltage offer the preconditions for precise measurement. On account of its high sampling rate and together with potentiometer position encoders, the compact 5-channel EtherCAT plug-in module represents an economical position detector.

The EJ3318 analog input allows the direct connection of eight thermocouples and is therefore particularly well suited to compact applications on the signal distribution board. The EtherCAT plug-in module's circuit can operate thermocouple sensors using the 2-wire technique. A microprocessor handles linearisation across the whole temperature range, which is freely selectable. The error LEDs indicate a broken wire. The compensation for the cold junction is done by two RTDs (Pt1000), which can be placed anywhere on the signal distribution board. The EJ3318 can also be used for mV measurements.

The EtherCAT plug-in module EJ5002 is an SSI master and allows the direct connection of two absolute encoders with SSI (synchronous serial interface) via the signal distribution board. Both singleturn and multiturn encoders are supported. The 24 V supply of the encoder can be provided directly via the feed-in on the signal distribution board. The EJ9505 power supply module can be used for an optional 5 V power.

The EJ5101 EtherCAT plug-in module is an interface for the direct connection of incremental encoders with differential signals (RS422) or TTL single ended signals via the signal distribution board. Two additional 24 V digital inputs are available for storing, blocking and setting the counter status. The error message output of an encoder can be connected and evaluated via the status input of the module. The encoder can be supplied with 5 V DC directly from the EtherCAT plug-in module.

The EJ5151 EtherCAT plug-in module is an interface for connecting a 24 V incremental encoder (24 V HTL) via the signal distribution board. An additional 24 V digital input is available for storing or blocking the counter reading. Alternatively, the EJ5151 can be used as up/down counter. The 24 V supply of the encoder can be provided directly via the supply on the signal distribution board.

The EJ6002 serial interface enables the connection of devices with two RS232, RS485 or RS422 interfaces. Apart from the convenient selection of the communication standard (RS232, RS485 or RS422) using the TwinCAT software, various operation modes can be set for the termination of connection cables. The devices connected to the EJ6002 EtherCAT plug-in module communicate with the automation device via the coupler. The active communication channel operates independently of the higher-level EtherCAT system in full duplex mode with 300 baud up to 256 kbaud. The serial interfaces guarantee high immunity to interference through electrically isolated signals. In conjunction with the TwinCAT Virtual Serial COM Driver, the EJ6002 can be used as a normal Windows COM interface.

The EJ6224 IO-Link master enables the connection of up to four IO-Link devices. IO-Link devices can be actuators, sensors or a combination of both. A point-to-point connection is used between the EtherCAT plug-in module and the device. The EJ6224 is parameterised via the EtherCAT master. IO-Link is designed as an intelligent link between the fieldbus level and the sensor, with parameterisation information being exchanged bi-directionally via the IO-Link connection. The IO-Link device is parameterised with service data from TwinCAT via ADS or very conveniently using the integrated IO-Link commissioning tool. Among other things the tool enables automatic scanning of IO-Link devices, comfortable editing of sensor parameters and an integrated online search for sensor description files.

The EJ6224-0090 IO-Link master enables connection of up to four IO-Link devices. IO-Link devices are actuators, sensors or a combination of both. The connection between the EtherCAT plug-in module and the device is a point-to-point connection.

The EJ7047 stepper motor module is designed for the direct connection of stepper motors in the medium power range up to 5 A and for a voltage range of 8…48 V. The compact stepper motor output stage is accommodated in the EtherCAT plug-in module together with two digital inputs for limit switches and an encoder interface. The second input can also be configured as an output in order to enable the use of a holding brake.

The integrated electronic type plate of the AM81xx motors can be read in automatically by the servo module to configure the motor parameters automatically. Thus, wiring and commissioning expenditure are minimised.

The EJ7211-9414 servomotor output stage with OCT, STO and TwinSAFE SC offers high servo performance in a very compact design for the AM8100 motor series up to 4.5 A (Irms). One-cable technology (OCT) combines motor cable and feedback cable for an absolute feedback system in a single cable. The integrated electronic identification plate of the AM8100 motors is read by the servo module for automatic configuration of the motor parameters. This reduces wiring expenditure and commissioning to a minimum.

The EJ7342 EtherCAT plug-in module enables direct operation of two DC motors. It is galvanically isolated from the E-bus. The speed or position is specified by the automation device via a 16 bit value. Connection of an incremental encoder enables a simple servo axis to be realised. The output stage is protected against overload and short circuit, the common thermal overload warning applies to both output stages together. The EJ7342 has two channels that indicate their signal state via light emitting diodes. The LEDs enable quick local diagnosis.

The placeholder modules can be plugged into unused slots on the signal distribution board. The slots reserved in such a way can be equipped with functional modules when the range of functions is extended.

The EJ9400 EtherCAT plug-in module is used in combination with the EJ1101-0022 EtherCAT Coupler to supply the E-bus with power. Data is exchanged between the EtherCAT Coupler and the plug-in module over the E-bus. Each EtherCAT plug-in module draws a certain amount of current from the E-bus (see “Current consumption E-bus” in the technical data). This current is fed into the E-bus by the power supply plug-in module. The maximum output current is 2.5 A.

The EJ9404 EtherCAT plug-in module is used in combination with the EJ1101-0022 EtherCAT Coupler to supply the E-bus with power. Data is exchanged between the EtherCAT Coupler and the plug-in module over the E-bus. Each EtherCAT plug-in module draws a certain amount of current from the E-bus (see “Current consumption E-bus” in the technical data). This current is fed into the E-bus by the power supply plug-in module. The maximum output current is 12 A.

The EJ9505 power supply module generates an output voltage of 5 V DC from the (24 V DC) input voltage. This output voltage can be used to supply power to EtherCAT plug-in modules or external sensors. The power LEDs indicate the module's operating state; the error LED indicates short circuit or overcurrent. The input voltage and the output voltage are not electrically isolated.

The EJ9576 EtherCAT module contains high-performance capacitors for stabilising supply voltages. The EJ9576 can be used in conjunction with the EJ7047 stepper motor modules, the EJ7342 DC motor modules and the EJ7211-0010 servomotor modules. Low internal resistance and high-pulsed current capability enable good buffering in parallel with a power supply unit. Return currents are stored, particularly in the context of drive applications, thus preventing overvoltages. If the regenerative energy exceeds the capacity of the capacitors, energy can be dissipated via an external braking resistor. The corresponding threshold can be directly parameterised in the TwinCAT System Manager.
