E-world energy & water will take place from 16 to 18 February 2016 in Essen, Germany. The leading trade fair for the European energy and water sectors will focus on innovative solutions for the energy supply of the future. Beckhoff will present its PC-based control solution as a foundational technology to create the energy management solutions of the future.

As an expert in the automation of wind turbines, Beckhoff has profound expertise in control, regulation and communication technology for the energy supply sector. With PC-based control, the foundational technologies for an intelligent monitoring and regulation of energy grids are readily available. The products developed by Beckhoff for Industrie 4.0 and IoT can be used just as well in the Smart Factory as in "smart" solutions for the energy industry. They enable seamless communication from the sensor to the cloud, process analysis, condition monitoring and the transparent monitoring of all energy consumptions.

Intelligent energy management makes a significant contribution towards optimising energy efficiency in buildings, properties or plants. With PC-based control, Beckhoff provides the technological basis for the transparent recording and processing of all energy consumption data. The consumption is measured via the Beckhoff I/O system. The raw data is transmitted to the controller via the fast, broadband EtherCAT system. The TwinCAT control software enables the pre-processing of data, such as analyses, scope or HMI functions. Especially for diagnostics, there are many different requirements defined by Industrie 4.0 strategies: online and offline condition analysis, predictive maintenance or long-term archiving of data. The prerequisite for being able to effectively analyse and optimise processes in technical building systems or production systems is a cycle-synchronous acquisition of data that is as complete as possible. Monitoring, regulation and simulation of energy grids

Beckhoff has profound expertise in control, regulation and communication technology for the energy supply sector. For example, more than 40,000 wind turbines all over the world are equipped with Beckhoff control components. All functions, from operational management to pitch control to wind farm networking are controlled by Embedded PCs. With PC-based control, including terminals for system-integrated power measurement, Beckhoff offers basic technologies for monitoring and regulating energy grids:

  • Detection of overloaded neutral conductors and potential sources of interference for electronic devices through measurement of the third harmonic
  • Detection of vector shifts in the grid (disconnection of generators from the grid)
  • Regulation of generators in order to achieve grid code compliance and thus grid stabilisation
