WSD: Plug-and-play for building automation Like USB, WSD is a plug-and-play technology for detecting and operating devices such as printers, scanners and mobile phones connected to a PC. With WSD, Microsoft extends plug-and-play technology to Ethernet-based devices.
Microsoft’s intention here is to open up the field of home automation. As a Windows Embedded Gold Partner, Beckhoff has already started implementing this new technology in its products. In the future, Windows CE-based controllers from Beckhoff will support the new WSD technology. Devices, sensors and actuators connected to the controller are detected automatically. Detected data points are made available to other Ethernet devices such as media centres via WSD. The technology builds on profiles based on the international "Device Profile for Web Services" (DPWS) standard. The "Web Services on Devices" technology is integrated by implementing these profiles in the components. All profiles are also available in the Embedded PCs, so that automatic detection is possible. Solutions have already been developed for a wide range of applications including lamps, weather stations, motion sensors, blinds and Miele@Home washing machines. Further applications will follow shortly.
