For demanding applications: calibrated analog inputs

In this 20-minute webinar, Martin Podrouschek, product manager for I/O systems, will talk about the calibration of analog inputs. Beckhoff offers a comprehensive device portfolio that is suitable for reading analog values into the controller, including voltages, currents, temperatures or weights. These devices are available as IP20 terminals for mounting on a DIN rail or as IP67 boxes for versatile mounting. In many applications, the analog input devices are installed and operated in the system as delivered by Beckhoff, where they have been calibrated and tested. In special cases, however, proof is required that an analog input complies with the specified measurement uncertainty. For this purpose, a calibration can be carried out and documented by a third party. Depending on the circumstances, a factory working standard calibration certificate, an ISO17025 calibration certificate or even a DAkkS calibration certificate may be required. This webinar also illustrates the solutions Beckhoff has available for such cases.

The EL3202-0020 is the factory calibrated version of the EL3202-0010. The EL3202-0020 analog input terminal facilitates the direct connection of two resistance sensors. The analog EL3356-0020 input terminal enables direct connection of a resistor bridge or load cell in a 4- or 6-wire connection technology. The ratio between the bridge voltage UD and the supply voltage UREF is determined simultaneously in the input circuit and the final load value is calculated as a process value on the basis of the settings in the terminal. With automatic self-calibration (can be deactivated), dynamic filters and distributed clock support, the terminal with measuring cycles of 100 µs can be used for fast and precise monitoring of torque or vibration sensors.

With a maximum data rate of 1 ksps per channel they are ideally suited for the recording of less dynamic procedures, such as slow oscillations and corresponding weighing procedures. In return, they measure with extremely low noise and are temperature-stable up to an ambient temperature of 60°C. The integrated bridge supply can supply 1 to 12 V and, like all other parameters, is adjustable online in the CoE at runtime. In addition, the ELM3542 features a connection for one TEDS-IC in the sensor per channel – this way the SG can be electronically read, detected and also written immediately upon plugging in. The ELM360x EtherCAT Terminals are designed for the evaluation of IEPE sensors (Integrated Electronics Piezo-Electric), which are mainly used for vibration diagnostics and acoustics. The constant current feed can be set to 0/2/4 mA. The input characteristics are also flexibly adjustable from DC to 10 Hz in the CoE. The ELM360x basically measures voltages AC/DC and in addition, the internal scaler function can be used if, for example, an output in acceleration [m/s²] is desired. The EL3314-0030 analog input terminal allows four thermocouples to be connected directly. The circuit can operate thermocouple sensors using the 2-wire technique. A microprocessor handles linearization across the whole temperature range, which is freely selectable. The error LEDs indicate a broken wire. Compensation for the cold junction is made through internal high-precision temperature measurement at the terminal. The EL3314-0030 can also be used for mV measurements.

The EL3681-0030 EtherCAT Terminal enables measurement of currents and voltages in a wide input range. The measuring ranges are switched automatically, as usual in advanced digital multimeters. For current measurements, two current paths are available, one of which is a high-current path for up to 10 A. The current and the voltage measurement facility can be used for DC and AC. The alternating parameters are output as true RMS values. The measurement readings can be read and processed with EtherCAT. At the same time, the EL3681-0030 enables the measuring type and range to be set via the bus.
