EL/ELM7xxx | EtherCAT Terminals, compact drive technology

Beckhoff offers a wide range of compact, modular, and scalable drive solutions at I/O level for connecting all common drive technologies such as servo, stepper, BLDC, and DC motors in the low voltage range up to 48 V. In terms of performance, the spectrum ranges from 50 mA for controlling external power amplifiers up to 16 A for the direct operation of a servomotor. The direct integration into the Beckhoff TwinCAT automation software enables convenient and fast programming. In doing so, TwinCAT 3 offers the ideal development environment for the fast and efficient implementation of drive technology requirements with comprehensive and powerful tools such as the Motion Designer, Drive Manager 2, or Scope.

In addition, Beckhoff also offers an extensive selection of accessories, which includes not only pre-assembled cables and gearboxes, but also brake chopper terminals, braking resistors, and an external fan cartridge for increased performance.

EL7xxx: Scalable solutions for all common drive technologies in the familiar terminal format

Servomotor terminals
Full-featured servo drives in compact EL EtherCAT Terminal format for 48 V DC offer a high level of performance for the direct control of servomotors. Virtually all applications can be covered thanks to the high scalability in all performance classes from 2.8 A to 16 A. A hardware STO input is also available as an option.

Stepper motor terminals
The stepper motor terminals are designed for the direct control of stepper motors for the safety extra-low voltage range. The portfolio covers two performance classes: the EL703x for motors up to 1.5 A and the EL704x for motors up to 5 A. Additional inputs support drive-related functions such as homing and final position monitoring.

BLDC motor terminals
The EL7411-xxxx BLDC motor terminal is used to control BLDC motors up to 48 V DC with hardware enable input for STO (safe torque off) applications. BLDC technology facilitates the integration of servomotors with encoder feedback or hall sensors for direct connection to the terminal.

DC motor terminals
The EL73xx EtherCAT Terminals enable the operation of DC motors, such as those for 24/48 V belt drives. When operated with the ZB8610 fan cartridge, DC motors with an output of up to 6.5 A can be operated directly at the terminals.

ELM72xx: Powerful servomotor terminals in robust metal housing

The ELM72xx EtherCAT Terminals are full-featured servo drives in a robust metal housing with an output current (Irms) of up to 16 A at a power supply voltage of 48 V DC. They expand the Beckhoff range of compact drive technology in terminal format and include all the latest technological features along with increased performance and functionality when compared to the EL versions.

The metal housing of the ELM72xx provides optimum heat dissipation as well as superior shielding against electrical interference – even at high outputs. The servomotor terminals can be directly connected to the EtherCAT Terminals on the DIN rail, which makes them an integral part of the I/O system from Beckhoff.

The comprehensive functionality includes the direct connection of motor, feedback, and brake via the convenient connector front end, an integrated absolute value interface, and One Cable Technology (OCT).

The ELM72xx servomotor terminals feature TwinSAFEas standard for implementing the STO/SS1 safety function according to IEC 61800-5-2. What’s more, the functionality of a TwinSAFE Logic is integrated so that the terminals can also be used as a safety controller.

Special features:

  • automatic reading of the electronic identification plate
  • TwinSAFE STO/SS1, integrated Logic
  • pluggable connection technology
  • integrated path control

The ELM72xx-9018 model also supports fully comprehensive Safe Motion safety functions such as:

  • stop functions (STO, SOS, SS1, SS2)
  • speed functions (SLS, SSM, SSR, SMS)
  • position functions (SLP, SCA, SLI)
  • acceleration functions (SAR, SMA)
  • direction of rotation functions (SDIp, SDIn)
