Different form factors of the XPlanar tiles for every application

The XPlanar tiles are the highly compact drive units of the XPlanar system. The supplied energy is converted into a precisely controlled electromagnetic field, which causes the XPlanar mover to float and guides it with maximum freedom of movement across the XPlanar system. All components required to generate and control the field are integrated into the XPlanar tiles. This includes the coil groups and their associated power electronics, as well as the position detection, power supply, and EtherCAT G communication. For users, this level of integration makes for a compact and highly functional design that reduces the installation effort and the total system footprint.

Flexible arrangement

The arrangement of the XPlanar tiles is freely definable: Square, rectangular, L-shaped, and even annular systems can be achieved with ease. The variety of different tile formats ensures optimal use of space, and it is even possible to implement a staggered tile arrangement if required. To adapt the XPlanar system to new requirements, individual tiles can be added after the initial installation. For special applications, XPlanar tiles can be moved horizontally or vertically out of the tile network with additional actuators while the application is running. This offers the highest degree of investment protection and flexibility for users when designing a bespoke XPlanar system.

For special requirements

XPlanar systems can also be adapted to various environmental conditions by applying plastic films, glass panes, or non-magnetic stainless steels to the tile surface. This protects the tile from liquids, cleaning agents, and mechanical impact, making the XPlanar system ideal for use in demanding hygienic environments. What’s more, the smooth, edge-free surfaces and the elimination of mechanical components that require intensive maintenance mean far less manual cleaning is required.

Use with all movers

All APM4xxx movers can be operated on all XPlanar tiles, as long as this is geometrically possible. It is even possible to operate multiple movers in parallel on a single tile. Different movers can be operated in a single XPlanar system at the same time. One-way or two-way operation is possible on a single tile depending on the size of the respective movers and tiles.

Simple installation

The XPlanar tiles are particularly easy to install, with a dowel hole system in place to align them to the machine bed with exceptional precision. This provides a cost-effective, directly integrated solution for dissipating heat in highly dynamic applications. There are also cases where the machine bed can be cooled by water in particularly demanding applications.

Reduced machine downtime

The power electronics and position detection of the XPlanar tiles can be supplied separately with power. This allows the system to be switched motionless –e.g.,for tool changes or cleaning work – without losing the position of the movers. After switching the power electronics back on, operation can be resumed without delays thanks to the homing system. This results in increased system availability for the user with reduced downtimes.

Everything from a single source

The XPlanar tiles, along with all other components of the XPlanar system, are developed and manufactured by Beckhoff. Our experts are always on hand to support you, from the initial product concept through to full-scale series applications.
