Control up to 255 motion axes on a single controller, with synchronization in the μs range and up to 80 DMX masters per controller: this is the beginning of exceptional performance, because you can simply combine several controllers with each other if required. For example, to move countless motion axes synchronously and to implement ideas that can only be realized with technologies from Beckhoff.

There are also options to integrate SMPTE timecode via standard products or Dante® Virtual Soundcard – made possible by PC-based control from Beckhoff.

How does the operating concept contribute to success?

You have a wide range of multi-touch displays to choose from and use TwinCAT HMI as an HTML-5-capable visualization solution. The HMI can be combined with buttons, rotary selector switches, and other mechanical elements. In addition, it is just as easy to integrate specific consoles (e.g., MA Lighting) as it is to transfer data from external systems such as Blender, Chantaigne, Brainsalt Conductor, and others.

Within the Beckhoff platform, the control logic is freely programmable – with processes according to fixed steps (cues, presets, scenes), time sequences, or controlled by events or inputs.

Invented by Beckhoff and developed as an open standard from the outset, EtherCAT impresses with cycle times of well below 1 ms, maximum synchronization precision, and flexible topology. TwinCAT integrates all control functions, such as PLC, motion control, robotics, HMI, safety, and vision, on a central platform using a uniform time base.

A single platform for engineering, runtime, and modeling

TwinCAT is the central software platform for PC-based automation and combines engineering, runtime, and modeling in an integrated working environment. You therefore only need one piece of software to program and configure your controller. In addition to the IEC 61131-3 real-time standard, TwinCAT also supports C/C++ and .NET, as well as MATLAB® and Simulink®, so that you can choose the best programming language for your application. The integration of TwinCAT in Microsoft Visual Studio allows automation sub-projects to be programmed in parallel.

TwinSAFE consistently transfers the principle of PC-based control to functional safety and fully integrates safety functions into the control platform. Pixel-perfect control for big moments

The EL2574pixel terminal from Beckhoff extends the PC-based control platform with a powerful solution for the direct control of individually addressable LEDs. With four independent channels and support for up to 2,048 pixels,it enables high-resolution, dynamic lighting and color effects to be achieved for stage sets, media facades, and interactive installations.

The terminal, which is fully integrated into EtherCAT, allows precise, real-time-capable synchronization with motion, audio, video, and other technical systems. Color gradients, animations, and sophisticated effects can be freely programmed and flexibly integrated into show and media concepts.

Set a dynamic scene with Beckhoff

DMX is the standard protocol for controlling professional stage and event equipment and is the basis for dynamic lighting, color, and show effects in theaters, event locations, hotels, or salesrooms. The Beckhoff system flexibly integrates DMX devices in both directions: with the EL6851 DMX master terminal, you can control DMX slave devices such as moving heads, scanners, or spotlights directly – including RDM functionality. Conversely, signals can be received from a third-party DMX master using the EL6851-0010 DMX slave terminal.

Both applications can be freely combined. It is also possible to control non-DMX-capable devices such as DALI lamps or bus terminals via the DMX console. Lighting consoles can also be integrated via sACN, Art-Net™, PosiStageNet, and OSC.

Input and output of information without manual effort

Audio messages are an important element in the operation of entertainment applications, especially in theaters or theme parks. The Beckhoff TwinCAT automation platform offers ideal conditions for this: TwinCAT 3 Speech TF4500 enables audio messages to be generated automatically and in multiple languages without them having to be spoken in beforehand. TwinCAT Speech uses deep learning technologies and synthesizes realistic-sounding speech output. TwinCAT 3 Speech offers a choice of different voices for this purpose.

Complex information such as “Stage element 5 is currently 12.7 m above the stage” or “The temperature is 20.3 degrees Celsius” can also be generated and read out automatically, as the values of variables in the program code are also available via the voice output.

Thanks to the integration of the RRCS protocol in TwinCAT, the controller can communicate directly with Riedel systems such as Artist and Bolero as well as with Riedel SmartPanels.

Seamlessly integrated show and media systems

Together, Beckhoff and Riedel are creating new possibilities for automation concepts with integrated entertainment, media, and building technology. The RRCS protocol from Riedel is supported in TwinCAT on the basis of TwinCAT 3 IoT HTTPS/REST (TF6760). This allows the controller to communicate directly with Riedel systems such as Artist and Bolero. Logic, priorities, and show sequences are mapped centrally in the Beckhoff control system and linked to audio, communication, and stage systems.

Audio circuits can be switched dynamically, cue light signals and announcements can be automated, or complex show and theater sequences can be integrated, including building and lighting technology. There's also plenty of freedom in terms of the operating elements. There is a choice of Beckhoff multi-touch Control Panels and TwinCAT HMI in combination with classic light switches or control wheels and other mechanical inputs as well as Riedel SmartPanels or wireless Bolero beltpacks.

Precisely coordinated: Imagery, motion, and timing

The PIXERA system, developed by AV Stumpfl, is a solution for real-time media processing, compositing, and show control. As a system integrator, you have the option of easily integrating the required components of open PC- and EtherCAT-based control technology from Beckhoff into the PIXERA system. PIXERA control I/O modules can be used or integration can be carried out via ADS or PSN.

The PIXERA control I/O modules are based on Beckhoff standard products and are equipped with a special application that offers a convenient plug-and-control function. The coordinated hardware packages can be connected easily and directly to PIXERA control and knowledge of TwinCAT is not required. This enables solutions for the automation of PIXERA to be created cost-effectively in many small and medium-sized projects. Integration with ADS or PSN is also available for larger projects. TwinCAT knowledge is required in this case.

QRC enables seamless integration of Q-SYS® functions into TwinCAT and the overall control system.

Fully integrated audio and video control

US provider QSC® is one of the leading developers and manufacturers of audio and video technology for the entertainment industry. The core of the portfolio is the cloud-based software platform Q-SYS®. This can be used to centrally control complex AV systems for stage installations, concert and event halls, or movie theaters. Individual AV devices are integrated using a communication protocol. The most advanced protocol from QSC® is called Q-SYS® Remote Control, or QRC for short.

The JSON-RPC-based protocol uses a TCP/IP connection and combines three control types: Named Controls, Component Control, and Mixer Control. Beckhoff supports QRC, meaning that the Q-SYS® functions, such as those used to control audio routing, levels, and priorities, can be seamlessly incorporated into TwinCAT and integrated into the overall control system. Bidirectional communication is supported.
