EtherCAT P: ultra fast communication and power on one cable

EtherCAT P: communication and power on a standard 4-wire Ethernet cable.
EtherCAT P: communication and power on a standard 4-wire Ethernet cable.

EtherCAT P combines high-speed communication and power supply in a standard 4-wire Ethernet cable. It eliminates the need for separate cabling for the 24 V DC power supply not only for EtherCAT P devices but also for connected sensors and actuators. It also reduces the time and money spent on materials and assembly, saves installation space, and supports compact, decentralized machine concepts.

Both the system and sensor supply US and the peripheral voltage UP for actuators are transmitted together via the Ethernet cable, but remain electrically isolated. Up to 3 A is available for each of the two voltages. At the same time, all of the familiar benefits of EtherCAT are retained, including free topology selection, high transmission speed, optimum bandwidth utilization, dynamic processing of telegrams, high-precision synchronization, and extensive diagnostics. EtherCAT P is suitable both for the integration of remote compact I/O stations in the terminal box and for decentralized components directly in the process.

Decentralized I/O and flexible topologies in IP67

The EtherCAT P Box modules with an IP67 protection rating cover the typical range of decentralized I/O applications:

  • digital inputs with 3.0 ms or 10 µs filter
  • digital outputs with 0.5 A output current
  • combi modules with digital inputs and outputs
  • analog inputs and outputs with 16-bit resolution
  • inputs for thermocouples and resistance thermometers (RTDs)

Matching distributors are available to support flexible set-ups for line, star, and tree topologies. A current-carrying capacity of 3 A per EtherCAT P segment enables power to be supplied directly to numerous sensors and actuators. The system and peripheral voltages can be reinjected at any point in the topology if necessary. Topological branches can also be implemented without voltage boost.

Matching connectors and cables for every application

A connector family based on the One Cable Automation (OCA) connection concept, developed specifically for EtherCAT P, prevents incorrect connections with standard EtherCAT components and provides a secure, unambiguous connection. It covers applications ranging from the 24 V I/O level up to drives operating at 630 V AC or 850 V DC and currents up to 72 A.

Matching pre-assembled cables and cables for field assembly simplify installation and support rapid commissioning. Thanks to a variety of cable options, designs can be customized to meet specific needs – from compact connections over short distances up to cable lengths of 75 meters.
